Australian Jason Day will compete in the upcoming Tour Championship with the blessing of his pregnant wife.
Ellie Day, who is expecting their fifth child in early September, wants her husband to remain at East Lake Country Club in Atlanta this weekend if she goes into labor as opposed to returning home to Ohio.
“She said, ‘You’re not likely to make it back in time if I do go into labor,'” Day said, per Golf Digest. “We’re having a home birth. She said I may as well just play the tournament and try to win.”
Jason Day, 35, missed the 2012 Open Championship with the arrival of his first-born son, Dash.
“I’m just hoping that Ellie holds out another week or two weeks and I can be there and spend some time with my family,” Day said. “I think if this was my first (child), I’d be a little bit more nervous about it.”
Day faces a nine-shot deficit behind Scottie Scheffler heading into action in Atlanta.
A 13-time PGA Tour winner, Day ended a five-year drought in May by capturing first place at the AT&T Byron Nelson. He also finished tied for second at the 151st Open Championship last month.
