Jannik Sinner became the first teenager to win an ATP 500 event, edging Mackenzie McDonald 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 on Sunday in the Citi Open final at Washington.
Sinner, a 19-year-old Italian who was seeded fifth, captured the third and biggest title of his ATP Tour career. He is the youngest competitor to win an ATP 500 tournament in the 12 years since that level was formed.
His previous crowns came last November at Sofia, Bulgaria, and in February at Melbourne, Australia, both at the ATP 250 level.
McDonald, 26, was competing in the first ATP Tour final of his career, and he made Sinner work for the win. The California native saved 10 set points late in the first set before Sinner got the decisive service break.
McDonald fell behind 5-2 in the third set before saving two match points and leveling the score at 5-5. Sinner won the last two games to seal the championship.
