Jake Marisnick was suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount over the incident last week that led to Jonathan Lucroy suffering a concussion and fractured nose.
The Houston Astros outfielder was running to home plate when he violently collided with the Los Angeles Angels catcher, who was ultimately carted off the field.
“After thoroughly reviewing the play from all angles, I have concluded that Jake’s actions warrant discipline,” MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre said in a statement. “While I do not believe that Jake intended to injure Jonathan, the contact he initiated in his attempt to score violated Official Baseball Rule 6.01(i), which is designed to protect catchers from precisely this type of collision.”
After the collision, Marisnick led the cheer when Lucroy was able to get onto his feet, and he says he’s since talked to him about the incident.
Not long after the suspension was announced, MLBPA communications director Chris Dahl said that Marisnick will appeal the two-game suspension and fine, per Mark Berman of Fox 26 in Houston.
