The Philadelphia Phillies won’t have pitcher Jake Arrieta for the remainder of the season due to a bone spur in his right elbow that requires surgery.

Todd Zolecki of MLB.com noted Arrieta will have the surgery later this month, and that the Phillies expect him to be ready for spring training in 2020.

It’s been a season full of disappointment for Arrieta, and the Phillies, who signed him to a massive three-year, $75 million deal ahead of the 2018 season. Appearing in 24 games and tallying 135.2 innings of work, Arrieta posted a bloated 4.64 ERA and 1.47 WHIP while going 8-8.

The hope is that Arrieta, who’ll turn 34 before next season, can recover and get back to dominating once more after surgery. However, given the way he’s trended the past few years following his magnificent 2015 Cy Young campaign, we’re not holding our breath.
