Jaguars interim coach Doug Marrone sticking with Blake Bortles

We have absolutely no idea whether Blake Bortles fits into the Jacksonville Jaguars’ plans beyond this season. Following the firing of head coach Gus Bradley on Sunday, general manager Dave Caldwell refused to commit to the former first-round pick long term (more on that here).

Though, we do know that interim head coach Doug Marrone does plan on sticking with with Bortles for the final two games of the season. Marrone indicated as much in his introductory press conference.

“I am sticking with Blake,” Marrone said, via Jacksonville.com.

This shouldn’t be considered too much of a surprise. Jacksonville is merely playing out the string in what has been another disastrous season. It makes absolutely no sense for the Jaguars to turn to a backup in Chad Henne who likely has no long-term future with the team.

Bortles has been a complete and utter mess this season, throwing 16 interceptions while failing to complete even 58 percent of his passes. However, there’s still some question within the Jaguars’ organization about his long-term future. If that’s the case, any more tape a new head coach might be able to get on Bortles will surely help the evaluation process.
