It wasn’t long ago that reports were swirling about a potential reunion between LeBron James and J.R. Smith, but things have changed on that front.

The Cleveland Cavaliers waived Smith on Monday, meaning he’ll be free to sign with any team one he clears waivers. Contrary to what was being reported recently, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski notes the Lakers are “an unlikely destination.”

Los Angeles has done a lot of work to retool the roster following Kawhi Leonard’s decision to sign with the rival Clippers in free agency. Danny Green signed with the Lakers, along with Rajon Rondo and Avery Bradley.

Those moves likely are the big reason why Smith won’t be making another playoff run with James, whom he won an NBA title with during their shared tenure with the Cavaliers.
