Isaiah Rodgers could be facing banishment from NFL after betting on football

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Suddenly the NFL’s gambling problem came back to life after Monday’s realization that Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers supposedly made “100 bets” on various sports events, including pro football games.

The Colts have since released a statement acknowledging the NFL’s ongoing investigation into one of their players, and Rodgers has even issued an apology, where he wishes to “take full responsibility for his actions.”

What responsibility that entails is yet to be known. But one NFL insider, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, suggests Rodgers’ actions could lead to the ultimate punishment by commissioner Roger Goodell.

Florio hypothesizes that Rodgers’ alleged gambling violations just might be enough for Goodell to pursue permanent banishment for the 25-year-old athlete. He cites some specific language in the league’s gambling policy, revealed in 2022.

“Apparent or alleged violations of this Policy by NFL Personnel will continue to be decided by the Commissioner or his designee on a case-by-case basis. Violations of this Policy constitute conduct detrimental to the League and will subject the involved club and/or person(s) to appropriate disciplinary action by the Commissioner. Disciplinary action may include, without limitation, severe penalties up to and including a fine, termination of employment and/or banishment from the NFL for life.”

PFT goes on to remind us that commissioner Goodell holds all the cards here when it comes to deciding whether to make an example out of Rodgers or find another way to hand down punishment for a very real issue the NFL is still trying to learn how to handle.

Calvin Ridley was previously suspended for a full season, but that’s nothing in comparison to a potential lifetime ban. We’ll see what Rodgers faces soon enough.
