Iowa State on Tuesday canceled two basketball games set for later this week due to the likelihood of a winter storm approaching its Ames, Iowa campus.

The Cyclones men’s basketball team was slated to face Omaha on Wednesday and the women’s basketball team had a game against Drake scheduled for Thursday.

With a winter storm watch in effect and 6-10 inches of snow in the forecast, the Iowa State athletics department said the games would not be played or rescheduled.

“After consulting with both Omaha and Drake, we believe that canceling both games today will afford the student-athletes from all four teams the opportunity to depart ahead of the storm and return safely to their homes to spend the holidays with their families,” Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a statement.

The Iowa State men’s team (9-2) has spent time in the AP Top 25 poll this season, though it’s currently unranked. The women’s team (8-2) is ranked No. 14 in the country. The Omaha and Drake games were to be their final tune-ups before Big 12 play.
