Ill-Timed Washington Redskins’ Cheerleaders Photo Surfaces

Isn’t it perfect timing for this photo celebrating years of the Washington Redskins’ cheerleaders to hit social media outlets?

Which is your favorite cheerleading uniform? This photo takes us back to 52 of the best Redskins’ cheerleader uniforms. It was 52 years ago that a group of American Indians objected to the team name and visited the team president Edward Bennett Williams.

The petitioners’ legal documents indicated that Williams took measures to remove offensive references to the American Indians and one was that the cheerleaders could not wear the black-braided hair wigs. If you note the cheerleader on the far left of the photo is wearing the black-braided wig.

One of the six trademark registration cancellations last week was “Redskinettes,” which was what the original cheerleaders for the team were called.
