Heat G Dion Waiters reportedly considering season-ending ankle surgery

Having missed the past seven games with an ankle injury, Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters is weighing all of his options as the NBA season hits its second half.

According to this report from Barry Jackson over at the Miami Herald, Waiters is seriously considering undergoing ankle surgery, which would end his 2017-18 season.

“Heat guard Dion Waiters has been giving serious consideration to undergoing ankle surgery, a procedure which would end his season, according to an associate,” Jackson reported. “A decision could come at any time, with continued rest and treatment as the other option being considered.”

Waiters, 26, re-signed with the Heat on a four-year, $52 million contract this past summer. But his first year under said deal has not necessarily gone according to plan. The former Cleveland Cavaliers top-five pick is averaging 14.3 points while shooting at just 40 percent from the field.

Despite this, Miami heads into Thursday’s action with a 24-17 record and as a top-four seed back east. Veteran Wayne Ellington has performed well in Waiters’ stead, averaging 14.5 points and shooting at a 37 percent mark from distance in the past six games.
