The Court of Arbitration for Sport expects to issue a ruling on Monday as to whether Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva will be allowed to compete in the women’s singles event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
The organization said a three-member panel will hear Valieva’s case on Sunday (7:30 a.m. ET) via videoconference, with a decision scheduled for the following day.
Valieva’s eligibility was thrust into doubt earlier this week when it was rumored she tested positive for a banned substance in December. She was part of the team representing the Russian Olympic Committee that won the gold medal in the team competition earlier this week in Beijing, but that medals ceremony has been delayed.
On Friday, the International Testing Agency confirmed Valieva’s positive test, taken at the Russian national championship in December. The drug in question is Trimetazidine, used by patients to treat angina. It has been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency since 2014.
It is not clear whether the arbitrators also will decide whether ROC will be forced to forfeit the team gold. The United States won the silver medal and would be elevated to gold if ROC is disqualified.
While Valieva tested positive in Dec. 25, it was not reported until Feb. 8 — the day after the conclusion of the team event. Valieva, 15, became the talk of Beijing after she became the first woman in Olympics history to land a quadruple jump in competition.
The arbitrators will be Fabio Iudica of Italy, Jeffrey Benz of the U.S., and Dr. Vesna Bergant Rakocevic of Slovenia.
