A week that has seen Major League Baseball rocked by tragedy is ending on yet another horrible note around the sports world.

The University of Hawaii and Athletic Director David Matlin announced on Friday that linebacker Scheyenne Sanitoa has passed away at the age of 21.

“It’s always heartbreaking to lose a member of our UH ohana, particularly when it’s one of our young student-athletes,” Matlin said. “Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends, his teammates, and to all those who knew and loved him.”

Considered an up-and-coming prospect, Sanitoa was slated to vie for a starting job this coming season. He appeared in 12 games as a sophomore last season, recording 30 tackles.

There’s no other information available regarding his cause of death. But our thoughts to out to Sanitoa’s family and the entire Hawaii football program.
