Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia won the Next Gen ATP Finals on Saturday, coming from behind to top Arthur Fils of France 3-4 (6), 4-1, 4-2, 3-4 (9), 4-1 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Next Gen ATP Finals are the season-ending event for the top-ranked male players 21 and under. The event format calls for best-of-five play, with four games winning the set.
Both Fils, the tournament’s top seed, and Medjedovic were undefeated after the round-robin group stage, and won their semifinals matches on Friday to advance to the finals.
In the final, Medjedovic fired 19 aces and won the points on his first serve 88 percent (61 of 69) of the time. He fought off four break points while converting three of his four break chances.
The 20-year-old Serb had a 34-23 edge in winners and also committed fewer forced errors, 19 to 24, than Fils, 19.
