Well, that didn’t last too long. Mere months after officially being named the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator, Greg Schiano announced on Thursday that he has stepped down from that role.
Schiano’s reasoning in a press release was that he wants to spend more time with his family and his faith.
This obviously comes directly out of left field. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach joined New England just recently after a stint as the Ohio State defensive coordinator from 2016-18. Prior to that, he spent 11 seasons as the head coach at Rutgers.
Given the timing of this move, the Patriots are put in a less-than-stellar position.
Head coach Bill Belichick will now likely take on a larger role on the defensive side of the ball after former top assistant Brian Flores departed to become the Miami Dolphins’ head coach.
