The strained relationship between the Green Bay Packers and Jaire Alexander could lead to a divorce via a trade before a key date in March.

As the Packers fight to end the season with a record over .500, the team’s relationship with two-time Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander has gotten awkward. In Week 16, the Charlotte native unexpectedly made himself one of the team captains for their game against the Carolina Panthers and participated in the coin flip.

The bizarre moment has led to a one-game suspension in Week 17 for the man who is currently the highest-paid cornerback in the league. That reportedly has only added to the importance of a major decision Green Bay must make early in 2024.

On March 20 Alexander is owed a whopping $8 million roster bonus. Following the weird incident in Week 16 and Alexander’s history with injuries, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Saturday that the organization will seriously contemplate if he fits into their long-term plans as that bonus date draws closer.

“His $8 million bonus now is expected to become the trigger point that likely will lead the Packers into a decision on whether to they want to keep Alexander or move on from him,” Schefter wrote. “Should they keep him, the Packers simply would pick up the option bonus, but Green Bay also could explore a trade.

After earning Pro Bowl honors for the second time in 2022, Alexander has only played in six games this season due to a shoulder injury. It will be the second time in the last three seasons that the 18th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft played in less than 10 games.
