New York Giants rookie first-round pick Daniel Jones has struggled with giveaways after opening up his career in grand fashion a few weeks back.
Jones has thrown eight interceptions and has lost two fumbles in his past four starts. That included a three turnover outing in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
Despite this, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur noted on Monday that the team will not go back to veteran Eli Manning. Jones will remain New York’s starting quarterback.
This makes a ton of sense. New York finds itself at 2-5 on the season. The team is going nowhere fast.
Bringing Manning back as the starter wouldn’t help the Giants as they enter the initial stages of a rebuild. He was benched for a reason after an 0-2 start to the season.
The No. 6 overall pick in April’s draft, Jones was always going to be a project.
A stunning starting debut in a comeback win over the Buccaneers back in Week 3 led to unrealistic expectations. He’s now hit the wall. It’s time for Jones and the Giants’ coaching staff to move on from these recent struggles.
