Why Giants must bring back Ben McAdoo

New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo

The New York Giants are 2-9. It seems unfathomable to imagine a scenario that ends with Ben McAdoo keeping his job. We understand that. But if the Giants really do fire McAdoo, they are being shortsighted. It’s as simple as that.

While not filled with as many sudden celebrity deaths as 2016, 2017 has not been a great year. Regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum, it’s hard to argue that isn’t an incredibly divided country (and for that matter, world) right now.

McAdoo is someone who brings us together.

We can all agree that McAdoo is a completely incompetent football coach, right? When trying to bring two radically opposite sides together, it’s important to find common ground. If we all agree that McAdoo is incompetent, we can work on the rest. And if someone really tries to argue otherwise, we simply need to pity that person for falling into the “contrarian for the sake of being contrarian” trap.

The Giants have the power to significantly limit the bitterness that so many of us feel right now. All they have to do is keep McAdoo around. Surely, that’s a good enough reason for them to do that.

But it gets better. While that one reason is certainly good enough, we have another reason why keeping McAdoo is important.

Comedy.

Do us a favor and turn on the news or go to a news site. Now, how long did it take before you stumbled across something about a horrible scandal in Washington D.C. or Hollywood? That doesn’t do much to make the world a happier place.

Now, do us another favor. Read some of the quotes that McAdoo has given us in 2017 alone. For a small sampling of those quotes, click here, here, here, or here. As the old saying goes, laughter is the best medicine. Just try to get through one of those quotes (let alone all of them) without laughing. Unless you’re a member of one group (more on that momentarily), it’s just impossible not laugh.

Of course, Giants fans are the one group who will have a harder time laughing at this. We feel your pain. It’s not fun to watch your football team struggle so mightily.

If this was the Cleveland Browns, we’d be a little more moved by that argument.

But New York has had plenty of fun. This franchise has won four Super Bowls since 1986 and two in the 21st Century. The same franchise is 2-0 in Super Bowls against Tom Brady and 3-2 in the playoffs against Joe Montana. Additionally, Giants fans tend to be fans of the mighty New York Yankees, as well. This is just karma.

Fans of the San Francisco 49ers have recently had to deal with Jed York, Jim Tomsula and Trent Baalke. Green Bay Packers fans, meanwhile, live in a world where Mike McCarthy is calling the shots. Past glory tends to get paid back down the line.

And with the possible exception of Tomsula, none of those people brought the incompetent/entertaining combo quite like McAdoo. Even Tomsula was in the Bay Area. It’s a big market. But it’s not New York. New York is difficult to ignore.

If we lose McAdoo, then we lose a great unifier. If we lose McAdoo, then we lose a constant source of humor.

Are the Giants really prepared to do that to the world just for the sake of a few football games? That seems awfully selfish.

For the good of this country. For the good of this world. McAdoo must be manning the New York sidelines in 2018.
