Giants HC says Wes Welker was ‘Very quick and worked out well’

The New York Giants are looking to add depth at the receiver position. In particular, the team is seeking to add a slot receiver to their unit, which is why Wes Welker was called in for a workout on Tuesday.

Head coach Tom Coughlin seemed to like what he saw.

“We brought him in, worked him out, he was healthy and he worked out well for us,” Coughlin said, via nj.com.

Coughlin also added that Welker looked “very quick, and very active.”

Welker, who dealt with multiple concussions during his two seasons with the Denver Broncos, stated earlier this year that he was not ready to retire and wants to play for two more seasons. He could be a short-term solution for the Giants, who are in need of someone to fill in for the gimpy Victor Cruz.

It was reported that Cruz was possibly going to be ready to play in Week 4 after taking several months off to heal from knee surgery. However, there has been a setback for Cruz whose most recent ailment is a sore calf.

At this time, the Giants’ third string wide receivers have totaled only five receptions for 43 yards over the course of three games. Most of that action came from Preston Parker, who the Giants released after dropping a few passes.

When Coughlin was asked about the chances of adding Welker to the roster, he responded vaguely with this:

“There is always a chance. There is a chance for anybody out there if the need comes around.”

Welker, along with Giants former wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who the team also worked out, are likely on pins and needles waiting for their phone to ring with potential good news.
