New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has been on the hot seat so many times during his tenure with the team that it’s hard to believe that he’s still the head coach of the suddenly struggling franchise.
But as many expected, the Giants confirmed that Coughlin will be back with the team for his 12th season as its head coach.
Giants CEO John Mara failed to give Coughlin any type of guarantee, indicating that he has not yet decided whether the future Hall of Fame head coach will be in a lame-duck campaign next season. Mara also said that coaching staff decisions will be left up to Coughlin, who doesn’t seem prepared to move on from any of his top assistants.
New York finished the 2014 regular season with a 6-10 record. It was the second consecutive season that the Coughlin-led team has finished under .500.
And for his part, Mara seems to know exactly what is on the line for the longest-tenured head coach in the NFC.
He knows that his legacy is on the line. He doesn’t want to have three losing seasons In a row.
Attempting to find a happy medium between short-term contention and a long-term plan, the Giants have struggled recently, missing the playoffs in five of the past six seasons.
