Giants announce that Steve Spagnuolo has interviewed for head coach job

The New York Giants will be welcoming in outside candidates for their vacant head coaching job here soon. That list will reportedly include Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

But the team announced on Wednesday that interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo was actually the first candidate to interview for the full-time position.

“Steve Spagnuolo, who just completed his third season as defensive coordinator and a one-month stint as the team’s interim head coach, met this afternoon with team president John Mara, general manager Dave Gettleman and assistant general manager Kevin Abrams, the threesome conducting the initial interviews. Giants chairman Steve Tisch will meet with the candidates later in the process,” the Giants announced, via their official website.

Spagnuolo served as the Giants’ interim coach for the final four games of the 2017 season after the team fired Ben McAdoo. Spags posted a 1-3 record in those four games. His only previous head coaching experience came with the then St. Louis Rams from 2009-2011. Spagnuolo posted a 10-38 record in those three seasons.

A veteran of the NFL sidelines, Spagnuolo has also spent time as an assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens. He’s been the Giants’ defensive coordinator since the start of the 2015 season, his second go-around in that role after serving in the same capacity in 2007 and 2008.
