Just 20 days ago, quarterback Stetson Bennett helped lead the Georgia Bulldogs to their second consecutive College Football National Championship. It doesn’t get much better than that for a young athlete.
Yet, the end of Bennett’s January isn’t going so well. Early on Sunday morning, the 25-year-old Georgia native got arrested on a public intoxication charge in Dallas, Texas. Bennett’s arrest occurred at about 6 AM in Old East Dallas, according to authorities.
Police officers were initially called to the scene after responding to reports of a “man banging on doors in the area.” But when the officers arrived, they found Bennett, and police quickly came to the conclusion that the Georgia QB was intoxicated.
Yet, the police report does not indicate that it was Bennett who was causing a ruckus, knocking on doors at the crack of dawn. Either way, Bennett was arrested and then taken to a city detention center. It is unknown when he will be released.
While Bennett’s college career may be done, this latest incident likely won’t earn him any favors when seeking his next job, whether that’s via the NFL pre-draft evaluation process or doing something else.
Currently, Bennett projects as a Day 3 draft pick, and after a successful college career where he threw for over 4,100 yards in his final season, he’ll have to hope scouts overlook this latest mistake while being enamored with his ability to lead his teammates into battle on the gridiron.
