After throwing out a fabulous freshman trio this past season, the Duke Blue Devils were hoping for much of the same next year.

Sure the team still has what many consider the best recruiting class in college basketball. But that took a hit on Thursday with news that five-star recruit and combo guard Boogie Ellis has asked out of his commitment from the Blue Devils. Per 247 Sports, it’s expected to be granted.

Ellis, a Southern California native, was an early signee for head coach Mike Krzyzewski and Co. back in November. The 6-foot-2 guard ranked as the No. 34 overall recruit and No. 5 combo guard in the nation.

Despite losing Ellis, Duke has Cassius Stanley, Vernon Carey, Matthew Hurt and Wendell Moore as top-31 recruits from this year’s class.
