There are certain plays that occur during the long MLB season that just defy logic or reason. What Fernando Tatis Jr. did Sunday is one of them.

The San Diego Padres are in Pittsburgh taking on the Pirates. In the top of the first inning, Tatis was on third base when Hunter Renfroe popped up a ball to second. Kevin Newman, playing right behind second in a shift, was in perfect position for the easy out.

But he wasn’t prepared for what happened next. Tatis took off from third after tagging up, and by the time Newman realized what happened it was too late.

Tatis beat his throw by a narrow margin to steal a run. Just an incredibly gutsy, savvy play by the 20-year-old phenom.
