After a week in the high deserts for The American Express, the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing continues to San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, a high-quality course that has been used for two U.S. Opens, including in 2021 and in 2008 when Tiger Woods made a birdie putt to force an 18-hole playoff for his eventual major victory.

Although this tourney is not one of the PGA Tour’s eight Signature Events, it consists of a loaded field as some of the game’s top players are on property.

Last week, the only amateur in the field – Nick Dunlap – won The American Express in the Coachella Valley, scoring 29-under par at PGA West to become the first player since Phil Mickelson in 1991 to win a PGA Tour event as an amateur. Dunlap also became the first reigning U.S. Amateur Champion to win on the PGA Tour since Woods in 1996.

At 20 years and 29 days, Dunlap became the youngest player to win a PGA Tour event since Chick Evans won the 1910 Western Open and the second-youngest PGA Tour winner since World War II, only trailing Jordan Spieth when he won the 2013 John Deere Classic.

Dunlap, who is a sophomore on the University of Alabama men’s golf team, received PGA Tour membership for the next two years with his victory. He also has exemption into each of the seven remaining Signature events (if he turns pro) as well as already having exemption into The Players Championship, the Masters, U.S. Open and The Open Championship for winning the 2023 U.S. Amateur Championship.

At Torrey Pines this week, players will play both the North and South courses the first two rounds round before sticking to the South for the final two rounds after the 36-hole cut for top 65 and ties. The North Course plays slightly easier compared to the South Course, but the challenges will present themselves on both courses, especially playing in one of the toughest roughs on the PGA Tour while attacking some difficult ocean breezes.

With the rain earlier in the week, it is going to set up softer conditions around the property, which players will have to adapt to, especially within the first two rounds.

Because of the PGA Tour’s television deal with CBS, the first round is on Wednesday and the tournament will conclude with the final round on Saturday due to CBS’ TV slot with the NFL’s Conference Championship on Sunday.

Who are some of the top golfers in the Farmers Insurance Open field?

Three of world’s 10 best players are on hand, including world Nos. 5-7 in Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Max Homa, respectively.

All three have direct ties to Southern California, as Schauffele attended nearby Scripps Ranch High School and San Diego State University. Cantlay and Homa both grew up in the Los Angeles area as Cantlay attended UCLA.

Homa is the reigning Farmers Insurance Open winner after shooting 13-under par last year, beating Keegan Bradley by two strokes.

Including the trio in the top 10, there are 12 players in the top 30 who are competing this week,  including Justin Thomas. Thomas made his season debut last week at PGA West and finished tied for third with Schauffele and Kevin Yu.

World No. 12 Collin Morikawa is looking to capitalize on his third-place finish at Torrey Pines a year ago. Both Homa and Morikawa are teeing it up for the first time since The Sentry two weeks ago when Morikawa finished inside the top five and Homa inside the top 15.

In addition to Morikawa having California ties, so do Michael Kim, Sahith Theegala and J.J. Spaun. Kim played high school golf at Torrey Pines, Spaun played golf at San Diego State and Theegala also grew up in Los Angeles area and attended Pepperdine. At No. 5 in the FedEx Cup standings, Theegala is highest rated player in the field this week.

This week is final event of the first Aon Swing 5 stretch of the season with spots on the line for next week’s signature event, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The Sony Open winner Grayson Murray lead the way with last week’s runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout as well as Thomas trailing behind.

5 players with the best chance to win the Farmers Insurance Open trophy

Keegan Bradley

Keegan Bradley rolls into San Diego following his runner-up appearance last season as well as a second-place finish in Hawaii for The Sony Open, his most recent tournament. Last year, Bradley shot a 6-under 66 in Sunday’s final round and finish first in strokes gained putting combined with a second in strokes gained total.

Bradley is coming off a 2022-23 season when he recorded two wins at the ZOZO Championship and the Travelers Championship to go along with six top-10s, including finishing T9 at the Tour Championship in August. He reached the five-man playoff at The Sony Open before succumbing to Murray, who made a long birdie putt for the win.

Max Homa

Max Homa is no stranger to not only winning in California, but also repeating at a tournament. Outside of winning two Wells Fargo Championships in North Carolina, Homa’s other four PGA Tour wins have come in the Golden State, including going back-to-back, winning the 2021 and 2022 Fortinet Championship in Napa.

Homa, who won the Nedbank Golf Challenge in November on the DP World Tour in South Africa, understands how golf tournaments are like marathons and how he has to continue to fight in order to win.

Collin Morikawa

Credit: Ray Acevedo-USA TODAY Sports

Collin Morikawa strong start to 2024 with a top-five finish at The Sentry as well as his third-place finish at last year’s Farmers Insurance Open puts him in position to contend this week. A big key this week is avoiding the rough off the tee and Morikawa led the field in fairway accuracy at Torrey Pines 12 months ago, which led to ranking second in greens in regulation.

Just like prepping for a U.S. Open, players need experience to excel and Morikawa certainly provides this week as he is making 101st PGA Tour start.

Luke List

Experience also favors Luke List this week as he is making his 10th Farmers Insurance Open. List won the Farmers Insurance Open two years ago, followed by a top-25 last year. On his way to victory in 2022, Bradley used a final round 6-under 66 to record the win at 15-under par.

He also recorded a 10th place finish the year before that, which featured two 66s to bookend his 2021 tournament run.

Sahith Theegala

One of the PGA Tour players who stole the show a couple of years ago as rookie had a strong Farmers Insurance Open last year with a T4 finish. Sahith Theegala kicked off his tournament with a first round 6-under 66 before his top five finish. He went on to finish 31st in the FedEx Cup standings, nearly missing out on the Tour Championship, a goal that he has in 2024.

Theegala comes into this week having played both events in Hawaii, which was highlighted by a second-place finish at The Sentry, shooting 28-under par. Although this week will not be as high scoring compared to The Sentry or The American Express, Theegala is in the mix to shoot low and contend on Saturday.
