Formula One’s all-time wins leader is making a significant career change. Lewis Hamilton has raced for Mercedes-Benz since 2013, but after 12 seasons, he’ll be calling it quits.

It’s not like retirement quitting, just a change of scenery for the F1 superstar. But he’s not ready to go back to racing for the McLaren team, either. Instead, Hamilton is taking his talent to one of the most recognizable Italian brands around.

According to ESPN, Lewis Hamilton is set to replace Carlos Sainz on the Ferrari team beginning in 2025. This means Hamilton will try to become F1’s most accomplished champion with a team that has not celebrated a drivers title since Kimi Raikkonen accomplished the feat back in 2007.

Hamilton, who previously won with McLaren and Mercedes, has a chance to become the first driver to win an F1 championship with three different race teams since Juan Manuel Fangio did so in 1957.

Previous indications suggested Hamilton would never team up with Ferrari, as he had laughed at the concept in the past. Yet, ESPN reports Ferrari’s chairman John Elkann was “determined to land a big-name.”

As to where Sainz may be headed now? Reports suggest the Spaniard could join Audi, but not until 2026. Other possibilities include re-joining the Red Bull racing team, with the future of Sergio Perez in question.
