Herb Douglas, the oldest living U.S. Olympic medalist, died Saturday at the age of 101.
The University of Pittsburgh announced the passing of its esteemed alumnus, a bronze medalist in the long jump at the 1948 Summer Games in London.
“The track and field legend was a storied businessman and philanthropist who inspired people the world over,” the school’s athletic department posted Monday on Twitter.

Douglas, a Pittsburgh native, was inducted into the inaugural Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame class in 2018.
He competed in the London Olympics a few months after graduation. His jump of 24 feet and 9 inches trailed USA teammate Willie Steele (25 feet, 8 inches) and Australia’s Theo Bruce (24 feet, 9.5 inches).
