
Danny Corona smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to lift top-seeded Wake Forest to a 3-2 victory over No. 8 Stanford on Saturday in an opening-round game at the Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
Brock Wilken added a solo home run for the Demon Deacons (53-10), who will face the winner of the LSU-Tennessee game in the next round. The Tigers and Volunteers were scheduled to play later Saturday.
Stanford will face the loser of the game between LSU and Tennessee in an elimination game.
Seth Keener (8-1) earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out four of the five batters he faced. Eddie Parked reached base in the ninth thanks to an error, but Camden Minacci got Tommy Troy to ground into a game-ending double play to pick up his 13th save.
The Cardinal (44-19) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Malcolm Moore was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. After Wilken’s homer tied things up in the second, Carter Graham’s RBI single in the third put Stanford back on top, 2-1.
Graham went 3-for-4 for the Cardinal, while Ryan Bruno (2-2) took the loss.
Demon Deacons starter Rhett Lowder surrendered two runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings while walking one and striking out six. Stanford starter Joey Dixon allowed one run on three hits in four innings. He walked three and fanned four.
