ESPN and the College Football Playoff are discussing a plan to keep the network as the sole rights holder for the next eight years, according to a report by ESPN.
The contract would add six years to the final two of the current deal, meaning ESPN would televise all rounds of the new 12-team College Football Playoff through 2031.
According to the report, ESPN would consider paying the CFP $1.3 billion for the rights to the new six-year deal starting in the 2026 season.
College Football Playoff had been looking at NFL model to cover games
Reports had been swirling in recent weeks that the College Football Playoff wanted multiple broadcast partners. This would be similar to the NFL model, which has broadcast agreements with multiple networks and games are on different channels throughout the playoffs.
ESPN’s report says that the network would have the ability to sell the rights to some of the games. There was a recent report stating that Fox was interested in rights to some CFP games.
