LSU Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron kicked the year off right by winning a national championship. He now has something new to celebrate, a six-year contract extension with LSU.

According to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, Orgeron and the Tigers agreed to a six-year extension worth more than $42 million total. As part of the deal, per Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger, Orgeron will make $6 million per season in base salary. The contract also contains a $5 million split-dollar life insurance policy.

Just three years after being hired by LSU, Orgeron has turned the Tigers into a national champion with a 40-9 record in four seasons. Even more impressive, LSU boasts an 11-1 record in its last 12 contest against top-10 opponents.

The 58-year-old head coach has been a hit in the SEC and is beloved by his players, as this emotional moment with Joe Burrow showed. He’s certainly deserving of this contract extension and even with plenty of talent leaving, the Tigers are in goods hands with Orgeron for years to come.
