The Philadelphia Eagles want to own the rights to the now-famous phrase, “Philly Special,” which is the name given to their trick play that helped them win Super Bowl LII.
This, of course, was the Nick Foles receiving touchdown that occurred at the end of the first half, which came off a nifty reverse that totally caught the New England Patriots off guard.
ESPN’s Darren Rovell reports the franchise filed to trademark the phrase on Thursday, which would be used mostly on apparel. He also reports that the team is eighth in line for this trademark, as people from “Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida, as well as the Pennsylvania-based brewing company Yuengling, filed for rights to own the phrase.”
The Eagles will have to wait roughly four months for the USPTO to sort through the filings and then another eight months to see if they will be awarded the trademark. The big question, per the report, is “whether the play’s name belongs to the Eagles or deserves to be in the public domain.”
