Seemingly inevitable for the past few weeks, reality took hold in Green Bay Sunday afternoon. The Philadelphia Eagles made the decision to bench Carson Wentz in favor of rookie second-round pick Jalen Hurts.
It came came about midway through the third quarter with Philadelphia down by the score of 20-3 to the Packers. Wentz entered Week 13 leading the NFL with 15 interceptions. Fans and the media alike had been calling for him to be benched.
While Hurts did a few good things in Wentz’s stead, Philadelphia still lost by the score of 30-16. The team is now 3-8-1 on the season and in third place in the disastrous NFC East.
Will Carson Wentz be the starter Week 14 against the New Orleans Saints? Embattled head coach Doug Pederson touched on that following the loss to Green Bay.

Eagles bench Carson Wentz: Team will not commit to him as starting QB
This really shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. We previously focused on how ridiculous it was that Pederson had continued to stick with Carson Wentz under center.
Sure Wentz’s contract and previous success made it harder for Pederson to pull the trigger and bench the quarterback. With that said, Wentz did head into Week 13 leading the NFL with 15 interceptions. He has also fumbled 10 times.
During the first 2.5 quarters of Sunday’s game, leading to the Eagles deciding to bench Carson Wentz, the quarterback tallied 56 net passing yards on 15 attempts. He was downright terrible in the first two quarters, tallying a total of 16 net passing yards in the process.

Eagles bench Carson Wentz: What’s next?
Hurts responded by completing 5-of-12 passes for 109 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Philadelphia actually made it a one-score game against a vastly superior Packers squad before a 77-yard touchdown run from Aaron Jones iced the game.
The question is now rather simple. Does Pederson think Hurts gives his team a better chance to win than Wentz throughout the final quarter of the season? Despite their 3-8-1 record, the Eagles remain just one game behind the New York Giants in the loss column in the NFC East.
Meanwhile, Pederson is clearly on the hot seat heading into Week 14. There’s an obvious sense of urgency here. With games coming up against the Saints, Cardinals, Cowboys and Washington to close out the season, these Eagles still have a chance to earn the division title.
If this means making the decision to bench Carson Wentz permanent, then so be it. That has to be the thought process of Mr. Pederson following yet another ugly showing on Sunday.
