When a punter doesn’t need to appear in a game, it’s a great thing. But Monday, as Drew Brees set the NFL’s all-time passing yardage record, Thomas Morstead had someone in the crowd who probably would’ve liked to see a kick.
According to Luke Johnson of The Times-Picayune, Morstead’s former kicking coach, Jamie Kohl, specifically picked this matchup to watch the New Orleans Saints punter, as well as other past clients.
“Morstead had his old kicking coach come to his first game tonight to see him play, and [Kohl] got to see him hold,” head coach Sean Payton said. “It was one of those nights.”
Monday marked only the fourth time in Morstead’s 10-year career he didn’t attempt a punt, according to Johnson. The last such game happened midway through 2017.
In fairness, Morstead probably wasn’t too brokenhearted. He enjoyed a front-row seat to watch Brees become the passing king during a blowout win.
But if Kohl wants to see Morstead punt, he’ll need to find another game.
