Drew Brees: Marcus Williams ‘going to be one of the best’ FS in the NFL

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

It’s been a few weeks since Marcus Williams became a national figure for allowing Stefon Diggs to score a game-winning touchdown in the divisional round. The rookie safety received more than his fair share of criticism for the egregious mistake, but many people have also shown him a ton of support after he bravely faced the music in the locker room following the game.

Now, just days ahead of Super Bowl LII — a game the New Orleans Saints might be playing in if not for that mistake — Drew Brees is pumping up his young teammate, too.

Brees said, “Marcus Williams is going to be one of the best free safeties in this league… I know when that play comes around in the future, he’s going to make a play that’s going to allow us to win a big game or to win a championship.”

Some people never are the same after making an infamous play like the one Williams made (or didn’t make, in his case) a few Sundays ago. Based on the way he himself responded after the game and based on the unyielding support he has from his coaches and teammates, we’re betting he ends up coming back stronger than ever before.
