Drew Brees ahead of schedule in rehab from thumb surgery

When New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees went down with a thumb injury back in Week 2, the expectation was that he’d miss between 6-8 weeks.

It now looks like Brees could be back on the shorter end of that timeline. Brees spoke with Cox Sports Television in New Orleans following his team’s Week 6 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. He sounds optimistic that a return could be in the cards here soon.

Brees noted that he’s returned to throwing a standard NFL football and is ahead of schedule in his rehab after undergoing surgery on a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb.

“I feel good doing (throwing), but there’s more to it. Don’t just stand still, throw a ball and say I’m ready to go,” Brees said. The future Hall of Famer also noted that he’s seeing progress on a daily basis.

If that six-week timeline were to hold true, it would have Brees return to the field Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals.

That would be just in time for a four-game span against all NFC South opponents before what could be a big Dec. 8 game against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.

New Orleans has won all four of its games since Brees went down to injury, rallying behind backup Teddy Bridgewater in the process.
