The DirecTV hold on NFL’s Sunday Ticket might be coming to an end here soon. It’s well known that the league is not happy about the exclusive nature of the relationship. It’s led to subscribers on other platforms losing out on basic NFL Media offerings.
Now comes this report from Mark Burns of Morning Consult indicating that Disney, the parent company of both ABC and ESPN, has looked into acquiring the rights for Sunday Ticket.
This would be a massive change in the landscape of NFL programming. Any deal involving Disney likely wouldn’t be of an exclusive nature, giving other platforms an ability to pick up Sunday Ticket.
The NFL and DirecTV had agreed to a $1.5 billion per year extension back in 2014. Said deal runs through the 2022 campaign. Though, the NFL has an opt out following this coming season.
It will be interesting to see what comes of this.
