Add another one to the list. In a season that has been defined by a new term, “torn ulnar collateral ligament,” Arizona Diamondbacks starter Bronson Arroyo will undergo Tommy John Surgery.

The 37-year-old righty is 7-4 with a respectable 4.08 ERA on the season. Arizona signed him to a two-year, $23.5 million contract in the offseason. The primary reason behind that signing was the fact that Arroyo had proven himself to be among the most durable starting pitchers in baseball, averaging about 200 innings over the course of the previous nine seasons.
Arroyo likely won’t be able to return to action until next summer, at the earliest. While this isn’t necessarily a major blow to a team that doesn’t have playoff aspirations in 2014, it does indicate that the $23.5 million Arizona doled out to Arroyo will pretty much be a waste of valuable money.
