Midway through the 2017 NFL season, Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending ACL injury, the second of his football career.
Watson had previously tore his ACL during his freshman season at Clemson. But despite two ACL injuries he’s not planning on changing anything about the way he plays.
“Injuries are going to happen,” said Watson, per Dave Johnson of the Daily Press. “I’ve dealt with this injury before as a freshman. And I played the same way I did the year before.
“There’s no point in switching up the routine. I’ll stay prepared and stay fit throughout the year, not just in the offseason but throughout the season. I do what I do. I don’t want to change anything that got me here.”
Watson is a tremendously gifted young man who has the ability to evade pressure using his athleticism while maintaining a focus on making plays in the passing game once he’s outside the pocket.
He burst onto the scene as a rookie and was arguably one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the league when he was healthy. Setting multiple NFL records for rookie passers, he certainly has reason to want to continue implementing the same style of play that was so successful early in his career, and during his tenure at Clemson.
That being said, we sure hope he at least is open to the idea that it’s not always ideal to put his body in harm’s way. He’s too valuable a commodity to look for home runs every single play.
