Derek Jeter will not travel to Yankee Stadium with his Marlins

Derek Jeter

The long anticipated return of Derek Jeter to New York is not happening. Most figured the first-year Miami Marlins minority owner would join his team in its series against the Yankees in the Big Apple starting Monday.

Unfortunately for those hoping this would ignite some early-season drama, it’s not happening.

“Awkward situation,” indeed. Especially after Jeter and his Marlins sold reigning NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees for pennies on the dollar this past winter. Imagine Jeter being there as Stanton tears apart the worst team in baseball — his Marlins.

Either way, some will conclude that this is a chicken little decision by Jeter. Sure it would be an awkward situation, but he’s been the face of the Marlins since they started tearing down a once talented roster. By not going to Yankee Stadium, Jeter’s detractors will be once again be out in full force.

Jeter played for the Yankees from 1995-2014, earning 14 All-Star Game appearances and five World Series titles.
