Derek Carr out for season with broken fibula

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr

Like Marcus Mariota, Derek Carr is out for the remainder of the 2016 season with a broken fibula, Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio told reporters after Saturday’s game.

Carr will have surgery on Sunday to repair the damage suffered when he went down in the fourth quarter. He knew he had broken his leg as soon as the injury occurred and was seen in tears when he was carted to the locker room.

This is a massive blow to Oakland’s season. Carr, a legitimate NFL MVP this year, engineered seven fourth-quarter, game-winning drives for the Raiders this year and has been among the best quarterbacks around the league this season.

Before exiting the game Saturday, Carr had passed for 228 yards with three touchdowns, giving Oakland a big lead over the Indianapolis Colts. The Raiders went on to win the game, 33-25, but the team’s momentum was clearly stopped in its tracks after Carr went down.

Matt McGloin came into the game after Carr left and went 2-of-3 for 29 yards. He’ll have to play the rest of the way for this team, which improved to 12-3 on the season.
