The Denver Broncos surprised a lot of people by selecting cornerback Patrick Surtain II with the ninth pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on Thursday. The surprises continued in Round 2 with Denver moving up five spots to the 35th pick with the Atlanta Falcons to select stud running back Javonte Williams from North Carolina.
Denver yielded a fourth-round pick and received the Falcons’ seventh rounder to move up from the 40th selection to 35th.
A star for the Tar Heels over the past couple seasons, Williams was getting first round play leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-10, 212-pound bruiser of a back recorded nearly 2,600 total yards and 28 touchdowns in his final two years with North Carolina.
Williams is hard charging through the hole and loves contact. He broke a ton of tackles against pretty good college competition and has the vision as well as the patience to succeed at the NFL level. Add in a willingness to block, and the Denver Broncos got an absolute steal. Williams will team up with Melvin Gordon to form a solid running back duo in Denver.
