Early on in Friday’s Colorado Buffaloes vs. Stanford Cardinal game, it appeared that Deion Sanders’ team was on track to dominate his opponent. The Buffaloes held a 29-0 lead at halftime, but luckily for Stanford, there are four quarters to a game.
The Cardinal came rallying back after halftime, scoring 36 points, while Colorado only mustered 14 more. If you’re keeping track, that meant the game was headed to overtime on a night when kickoff didn’t take place until 10:20 PM ET.
Then Stanford completed the comeback in extra time, thanks to a poor decision by Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, who kept drifting back deeper out of the pocket to buy more time on 3rd-and-goal before throwing a pass that was easily intercepted by Stanford.
Then Stanford had their chance to put the game away, taking the ball at the Colorado 25-yard-line as college OT rules allow. They needed just three plays, gaining just nine yards, but it was enough to set up Joshua Karty for a 31-yard-field goal to send everyone home.
Afterward, an expectedly disappointed Coach Prime addressed the media, where he questioned his own players’ commitment to the game.
It was a historic loss, or comeback win, depending on how you look at it. Heading into play, home teams were 1473-0 when holding a 25-point lead at halftime. Not anymore.
