Midfielder Dax McCarty will return for a 19th MLS season in 2024 after signing with Atlanta United.

The 36-year-old veteran’s deal announced on Tuesday includes an option for the 2025 campaign.

McCarty ranks third in league history with 466 appearances since arriving in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft.

He has recorded 22 goals, 71 assists and 418 starts with FC Dallas (2006-10), D.C. United (2011), New York Red Bulls (2011-16), Chicago Fire (2017-19) and Nashville SC (2020-23).

“Dax has been one of the most consistent midfielders throughout his distinguished career in MLS,” Atlanta United VP and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said.

“Dax is a competitor and will bring a good mentality and leadership to our team. He has continued to prove over the last couple of seasons that he plays at a high level consistently and we are excited to welcome him and his family to Atlanta.”

Still going strong, McCarty played nearly 1,900 minutes in the 2023 regular season and helped Nashville reach the Leagues Cup final.

Atlanta United open the 2024 MLS season on Feb. 24 at defending MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew.
