Davis Love III has been named captain of the United States Team for the 2022 Presidents Cup, the tournament and PGA Tour officials announced Tuesday morning.

The 2021 Presidents Cup competition was postponed one year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Love, 56, will look to guide the Americans to victory against the International Team at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 22-25, 2022. South Africa’s Trevor Immelman was named the captain of the International Team in April 2020.

Love becomes the ninth United States captain. He has represented the Americans in the Presidents Cup on six occasions, including the inaugural event in 1994.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” Love said in a statement released by the PGA Tour. “My history with this event dating back to 1994 conjures up indelible memories of competition, camaraderie and sportsmanship, and I’m thrilled be leading the top American players into Quail Hollow Club next September. The U.S. team has been guided by some of the game’s all-time greats since 1994, and I will do my best to carry on that legacy as we look to retain the Cup.”

Love served as an assistant captain for the U.S. Team in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

“Davis has been instrumental in the foundation and continued growth of the Presidents Cup, and it’s only fitting that he returns to Charlotte to lead the U.S. Team in 2022,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said. “He has been a role model to so many young players on the PGA Tour and I know that leadership will serve him well in this role as he leans on his wealth of experience as a competitor and captain in team competition.”

Love also was the captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup teams in 2012 and 2016.
