The New York Mets were already going to be without David Wright for a while. Now, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, the third baseman is talking about neck surgery. A finality that would end his season.

DiComo later added that Wright is still leaning towards rehab instead of surgery. He also noted that a trade may be in order if Wright opts for the season-ending surgery.
One way or the other, New York would be well advised to look for another third baseman. Even if Wright opts for rehab, he’s still likely to miss significant time.
When Wright was placed on the DL on June 3, his injury was thought to be a 6-8 week recovery. If he’s now considering surgery, it certainly wouldn’t seem like the injury is getting any better.
The Mets could use the offensive jolt that will be missing without Wright’s bat in the lineup. Wright had been having an up-and-down year for New York before getting hurt.
The third baseman owns a rather unimpressive .226 batting average. But thanks to 26 walks, Wright has a respectable .350 on-base percentage. He was also hitting for decent power prior to the injury, sporting a .438 slugging percentage with seven home runs.
