David Irving not interested in NFL return until marijuana policy changes

David Irving

Dallas Cowboys pass rusher David Irving was suspended indefinitely last week after once again violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

This is the second time in less than a calendar year that the Iowa State product has tested positive for marijuana.

While we have absolutely no idea how long the NFL plans to keep Irving banned, he took to social media recently to indicate that he has no plans on returning to the league until its marijuana policy changes.

Good luck with that, Mr. Irving.

Sure the NFL and NFLPA will discuss a change to the marijuana policy during the collective bargaining conversations this offseason. However, the league remains archaic when it comes to said policy.

At a time when state laws regarding the recreational and medical use of the substance have liberalized, the NFL remains in the dark ages. Multiple former players have spoken out over it — some concluding that the dependence of opioids as a pain-killing method is far more dangerous.

As it is, marijuana remains a banned substance in the NFL. Irving knew that full well both times he tested positive. Those are the facts. And now, it looks like his career could be over.

Irving recorded 12.5 sacks in four seasons with the Cowboys and was expected to contribute in a larger role this past season prior to the above-mentioned suspension.
