Dave Roberts boldly predicts Dodgers will win NL West

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is not letting a slow start dull his optimism for his team. Quite the opposite, in fact. While the Dodgers will enter May significantly behind the Arizona Diamondbacks, Roberts feels that 2018 will end just as 2013-2017 did, with the Dodgers on top of the NL West.

We certainly have to salute that kind of optimism. The first month of the season has been sluggish for the Dodgers, who entered Sunday’s action not only seven back of the division leading D-Backs, but in fourth place.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that there’s a lot of time left. The better news is that in terms of significant deficits, Arizona is the only real problem for Los Angeles. The Dodgers are in fourth place, but are only marginally behind the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants. Los Angeles wouldn’t even need a real cold streak from either of those two teams to catch them. Arizona is a different story but again, there’s five months of baseball to play.

Certainly, Los Angeles has slumped through the opening part of the season. How wise it is for Roberts to be so boldly optimistic can be debated. But if nothing else, the Dodgers and their fans should know that the skipper still sees good things from this club.
