The New York Giants have done nothing but gush about quarterback Daniel Jones since selecting him No. 6 overall in April. A month ago, offensive coordinator Mike Shula said he thought Jones could start in Week 1 if the Giants needed him to.
On Tuesday, head coach Pat Shurmur continued to tout the worthiness of his rookie, saying Jones is “on track to be able to get himself ready to play Week 1,” per Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com.
During the pre-draft process, Jones was praised for his intelligence, among other things. It seems clear that he is picking up Shurmur’s system quickly, and that he has impressed the Giants coaching staff as a whole.
Based on the reviews veteran Eli Manning has gotten this summer from beat writers who cover the Giants, the team may be relying on Jones far sooner than it anticipated.
Whether any of this translates to success on the field come Sundays — both in the short and long term — remains to be seen.
