Dallas Mavericks reportedly eyeing top role players from NBA contender with MLE in free agency

The Dallas Mavericks created significant cap space before NBA free agency by trading Davis Bertans. Now, after landing center Richaun Holmes, the Mavericks could reportedly turn their focus in free agency to wings that would strengthen their rotation.

Dallas has made it clear this offseason that re-signing Kyrie Irving is a top priority. The market for the All-Star point guard is extremely limited, with the Los Angeles Lakers no longer expected to be heavily involved.

It creates a strong likelihood that Irving will be back in Dallas next season. He would return to a team that added center Dereck Lively and forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft. With both players expected to play prominent roles next season, new targets in free agency have emerged.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavericks have their eyes on Bruce Brown and Grant Williams as potential free-agent targets. Dallas could try and land either player with the mid-level exception this summer.

Williams, a restricted free agent, is expected to leave the Boston Celtics this summer and will draw significant interest on the open market. The 6-foot-6 forward wouldn’t provide Dallas with scoring, but his defense would address a glaring need on the roster.

Brown, who is interested in returning to the Denver Nuggets, would also provide the Mavericks with a versatile defender. The 6-foot-4 guard has experience defending three positions and posted a 114 Defensive Rating last season.

Dallas has also been tied to the market for Philadelphia 76ers forward Tovias Harris. However, the 76ers’ asking price as of now is expected to result in him remaining with the team heading into the 2023-’24 NBA season.
