Free-agent linebacker Bobby Wagner was released by the Los Angeles Rams in late February in what was nothing more than a salary cap savings move. Since being freed up, Wagner has been rumored for a potential reunion with the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent a decade playing, along with strong interest shown by the Dallas Cowboys.
On Monday afternoon, ESPN’s Ed Werder reported that the Cowboys have indeed followed through and made contact with Wagner.
With two major suitors already in place and the likelihood of a couple more to come, a decision isn’t expected to happen overnight. Wagner, serving as his own agent, is still assessing what the true market value will look like for a linebacker of his ilk.
As mentioned, the Rams deciding to part ways with Wagner was strictly business and not performance-based.
Despite the fact that the future Hall of Famer will be turning 33 years old this coming June, Wagner has hardly shown signs of slowing down. In fact, last season he showed plenty of value in Los Angeles, playing in all 17 games and filling up the stat sheet with two interceptions, six sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 10 QB hits, and 140 tackles.
This is one of those rare cases where age might need to be removed from the equation so long as Wagner isn’t seeking an unrealistic long-term deal.
Well on his way to Canton when it’s all said and done, Wagner is a legend in Seahawks lore, notching eight Pro Bowls and six All-Pro honors over the course of his stellar 11-year career.
