D.C. United MF Lewis O’Brien suspended for serious foul

D.C. United midfielder Lewis O’Brien has been suspended for Saturday’s match against Inter Miami and fined an undisclosed amount for serious foul play against CF Montreal on Wednesday, the MLS announced Friday.

The Disciplinary Committee reviewed the play from the 84th minute where O’Brien was chasing Montreal’s Zachary Brault-Guillard from behind and stepped on the back of his right calf to bring him to the turf. The nature of the tackle caused players and the two head coaches (Wayne Rooney of D.C. United, Hernan Losada of Montreal) to engage in heated confrontations.

O’Brien was issued a yellow card at the time but the five-person disciplinary committee overruled it. The committee determined the action was egregious in nature and issued a red card suspension.

The match ended in a 2-2 tie.

O’Brien, 24, is on a short-term loan from Nottingham Forest of the Premier League. He has one goal and one assist in 10 matches.
